How to Use Claude: A Beginner’s Guide With 10 Practical Examples

To use Claude, go to claude.ai or download the Claude app for your computer or phone, create a free account and type a request in plain language, such as “Summarize this PDF in five bullet points.” Claude, made by the AI company Anthropic, can write and edit text, analyze files, search the web, write code and create documents or small tools called artifacts. The free plan covers everyday use, while Claude Pro ($20 a month in the US) adds more usage, more models and tools like Claude Code. This beginner’s guide explains how to get started, the main features and 10 practical ways to use Claude.
What is Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant, similar to ChatGPT and Gemini, that you talk to in a chat window. It is known for clear writing, careful editing and handling long documents. You can use it on the web, in desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and in mobile apps for iPhone and Android. If you are choosing between assistants, see our comparison of ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.
How do you get started with Claude?
- Go to claude.ai or download the Claude app from the App Store, Google Play or claude.com.
- Sign up with your email or a Google account.
- Type your first request in the message box and press Enter.

Claude plans and prices
| Plan | US price | What you get |

Prices and features change often, so check claude.com/pricing before you subscribe. Most beginners should start with the free plan and upgrade only if they hit usage limits regularly.
Which Claude model should you choose?
Claude comes in several models. As of October 2026, the main ones are Haiku (fastest, for quick tasks), Sonnet (the everyday all-rounder), Opus (for complex reasoning and long projects) and Fable (Anthropic’s most capable publicly available model). Paid plans give you access to more models, which you can choose from the model menu in the message box. If you are unsure, keep the default.
Main Claude features explained
- File uploads: attach PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, images or code and ask questions about them.
- Web search: Claude can look up current information and show the sources it used.
- Artifacts: documents, slide decks, code and small interactive tools that open beside the chat, where you can edit, revisit and share them.
- Projects: workspaces with their own chat history, uploaded files and custom instructions, such as “always answer in a friendly, simple tone.” Free accounts can create a limited number of projects.
- Memory: Claude can remember useful details across conversations, which you can review and manage in settings.
- Connectors: link apps like Google Drive or Gmail so Claude can work with your own files when you ask.
- Claude Code: a coding assistant for developers, included with paid plans. Compare it with other tools in GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code vs Cursor.
10 practical ways to use Claude

- Explain a hard topic: “Explain how compound interest works like I’m 15, with one example.”
- Plan your week: “Here are my tasks and deadlines. Make a realistic plan for Monday to Friday.”

Tips for better answers
- Give context: say who the answer is for, the goal and the format you want.
- Share examples: paste a sample of the style you like.
- Ask for options: “Give me three versions” makes it easier to pick the best one.
- Iterate: reply with “shorter,” “more formal” or “add an example” instead of starting over.
- Check facts: AI can still make mistakes, so verify important numbers, dates and quotes.

How do you keep your data private in Claude?
On the Free, Pro and Max plans, you can choose whether your chats help train Anthropic’s models. Open Settings > Privacy and turn off Help improve our AI models. New chats will then not be used for training, although conversations flagged for safety reasons may still be reviewed. Avoid pasting passwords, ID numbers or other sensitive data into any AI assistant. Our AI chatbot privacy settings guide covers ChatGPT and Gemini too.
