OpenAI Dots are always-on AI agents inside ChatGPT that keep working on a goal in the background, each on its own cloud computer, and check in with you when they need a decision. OpenAI launched Dots at its DevDay conference on September 29, 2026, for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers. This guide explains what OpenAI Dots can do, who can use them, what they cost and what early hands-on reports found.
What is OpenAI Dots?
According to SiliconANGLE’s report from DevDay, Dots are AI agents powered by GPT-6 Astra that are designed to work toward a goal without step-by-step instructions, even while handling several projects at once. Each agent learns its owner’s preferences from feedback over time.
Each Dot runs on its own cloud computer that you can open at any time to see what it is doing. With your permission, an agent can also work directly on your laptop.
What can OpenAI Dots do?
- Use thousands of apps: SiliconANGLE reports that more than 4,000 apps are reachable through OpenAI’s plugins.
- Work across channels: you can message or call your agent in ChatGPT on desktop, web or mobile, or reach it in Slack and Microsoft Teams, and the context follows you.
- Report back: agents send progress updates and ask questions when they need input.
- Research when idle: when it has no task, an agent can do “proactive research” to look for ways to help, with read-only access to your connected apps during that time.
Who can use Dots, and how much does it cost?
The rollout started with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers, and some accounts may wait several days. SiliconANGLE reports that Pro subscribers in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK are excluded for now, while Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces can join a beta once an administrator enables it.
One agent is included at no extra cost with Pro or Business Premium, and agent usage does not count against plan limits for the first month. OpenAI’s pricing page lists Pro from $100 a month in the US and includes “Dot, an always-on agent” among Pro features. OpenAI plans to offer extra agents and more capacity later, at prices it has not announced.
How does OpenAI keep Dots under control?
Actions that could touch your accounts or share your information must first pass a check OpenAI calls “auto-review”, and a monitoring system can pause or stop an agent over a safety concern. OpenAI also tells users to review consequential work because agents “can still make mistakes”.
In practice, that means you should start with low-risk tasks, keep payment and account changes behind your own approval and check the agent’s cloud computer when a task matters.
What did early hands-on tests find?
Early reviews describe a promising but rough experience. In a WIRED test, the agent helped research and shortlist furniture and sent product links to a message thread, but it also got the reviewer’s name wrong, mistranscribed spoken instructions and failed to solve a captcha it had offered to handle. The reviewer concluded that the feature was still rough after a few days of use.
That matches OpenAI’s own message that agents improve as they learn preferences, and it is a reason to judge Dots after a few weeks of real tasks rather than a weekend trial.
How does Dots compare with Meta Muse?
Meta released its Muse personal agent in the US on September 8, 2026. Like Dots, Muse runs on a dedicated cloud computer, but Meta says most use is free, with subscriptions for heavier users. Dots, by contrast, requires a ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium plan. Read our guide to Meta Muse on iPad for more on Meta’s agent.

Frequently asked questions
Is OpenAI Dots available on ChatGPT Plus?
No. At launch, Dots is available on ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium, with Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces able to join a beta.
Can Dots buy things for me?
Dots can act in apps and on the web, but actions that touch your accounts go through OpenAI’s auto-review check, and OpenAI advises reviewing consequential work yourself.
Is OpenAI Dots available in Europe?
Not for Pro subscribers at launch. SiliconANGLE reports that Pro users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK are excluded from the initial rollout.
Who should try OpenAI Dots?
Dots makes most sense for people already paying for ChatGPT Pro who have repeatable digital chores, such as research, follow-ups and coordinating work across Slack and other apps.
