AI Chatbot Privacy Settings: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

You can use ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini without handing over more data than you need to. Each one has a setting that stops your chats from being used to improve its models, a temporary or incognito chat mode, and controls for deleting history. This guide shows the exact AI chatbot privacy settings to change, what each company keeps anyway and what you should never paste into a chatbot.

What happens to what you type into an AI chatbot?

Your messages are sent to the company’s servers so the model can answer. Depending on your settings, they may be saved in your chat history, used to train future models and, in some cases, read by trained human reviewers. Each company also keeps some data for a limited time for safety and abuse checks, even when training is switched off.

The safest habit is simple: treat a chatbot like a shared document at work. Do not paste anything you would not want stored on someone else’s server.

How do you stop ChatGPT from training on your chats?

  1. On the web, open your account menu and go to Settings > Data controls.
  2. Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
  3. On iPhone or Android, open the sidebar, tap your profile, then Data controls, and turn off the same switch.

According to OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ, once the switch is off your new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, while your saved chats stay in your history. For one-off sensitive questions, use Temporary Chat: it does not appear in your history, does not create memories and is not used to improve models, although OpenAI says it may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

How do you stop Claude from training on your chats?

  1. Sign in to Claude and click your profile name in the bottom left corner.
  2. Choose Settings, then Privacy.
  3. Turn off Help improve Claude.

According to a September 2026 privacy guide from DeleteMe, when this setting is off, Anthropic follows a standard 30-day retention period for deleted chats. When it is on, de-identified data from new or resumed chats may be kept for up to five years for model training. Feedback you give with the thumbs buttons, and content flagged by safety systems, can be kept longer either way. For a single private conversation, start an incognito chat from the ghost icon; incognito chats are never used to improve Claude.

How do you limit what Gemini saves?

  1. Open the Gemini Apps Activity page at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, or from the activity option in Gemini’s settings menu.
  2. Turn off Keep Activity, or set auto-delete to 3 months instead of the default 18 months.
  3. Use temporary chats for questions you do not want saved.

According to the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, when Keep Activity is off your future chats are not saved to your activity or used to train models, but they are still kept for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond and protect its services. Google also says a subset of conversations is reviewed by humans; reviewed chats are disconnected from your account and can be kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity.

What should you never paste into an AI chatbot?

  • Passwords, recovery codes and API keys.
  • Card numbers, bank details and ID or passport numbers.
  • Medical records or other people’s health information.
  • Confidential work documents, client data or unreleased plans, unless your employer has approved a business plan for that use.
  • Private messages or photos of other people.

If you need help with a document that contains personal details, replace names, numbers and addresses with placeholders such as [CLIENT] or [ACCOUNT] before you paste it.

Are business AI plans more private?

Business and enterprise plans from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google come with separate terms and admin controls, and they typically do not use customer data for training by default. If you handle client information at work, ask whether your company has one of these plans instead of using a personal account.

Privacy also matters when AI is built into your phone or used to create images. See Apple Intelligence vs Gemini on Android and how to tell if an image is AI-generated, or read our AI tools guide for the full picture.

Your AI accounts deserve a strong, unique password too. Create one with our free Password Generator, which runs in your browser and never uploads what it creates.

AI wearables that summarize conversations raise similar questions. See our news on Amazon Bee Frontier and Bee Eclipse and how they handle privacy.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting a chat remove it from the company’s servers immediately?

Not always. Deleted chats leave your history right away, but companies keep some data for a period for safety checks, as described above.

Is incognito or temporary chat completely private?

No. These modes keep chats out of your history and out of training, but the company may still keep them for a short time for safety and abuse monitoring.

Which AI chatbot is the most private?

None is private by default in every way. With training switched off and temporary chats used for sensitive topics, all three can be used carefully. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison covers the other differences.

What should you do in the next five minutes?

Open each assistant you use, switch off training, shorten how long activity is kept and bookmark the temporary or incognito chat option. Then make it a habit to remove names and numbers before you paste anything personal. Privacy settings change from time to time, so check them again after major app updates.
