How to Scan a QR Code from a Screenshot (iPhone, Android and PC)

To scan a QR code from a screenshot, open the image in your phone’s photo app and let it read the code. On an iPhone, open the screenshot in Photos, then press and hold the QR code or tap the Live Text button. On Android, open the screenshot and tap the Google Lens icon, or use Circle to Search on supported Pixel and Samsung phones. On a computer, use Google Lens in Chrome. You do not need a second phone or a special app. This guide covers every method step by step, plus how to check that a QR code is safe before you open it.

Why scan a QR code from a screenshot?

QR codes are made to be scanned by a camera, but more and more of them arrive on the same screen you would use to scan them:

  • A Wi-Fi QR code a friend sends you in a chat.
  • A QR code in an email for an event ticket, a boarding pass or a two-factor setup.
  • A code on a website or in a PDF you are reading on your phone.
  • A photo you took of a poster or menu to scan later.

Your phone camera cannot point at its own screen, so the answer is to read the code from the image itself.

How do you scan a QR code from a screenshot on iPhone?

  1. Take a screenshot of the QR code. On iPhones with Face ID, press the side button and volume up together.
  2. Open the screenshot in the Photos app.
  3. Press and hold the QR code. In many cases, Photos detects it right away and shows the link.
  4. If nothing happens, tap the Live Text button (the small icon with lines in a frame, near the bottom right), then press and hold the code again.
  5. Tap Open in Safari, or choose Copy Link to check the address first.

This works on iOS 16 and later. If your iPhone does not detect the code, install the free Google app or Google Photos and use Google Lens on the screenshot instead.

How do you scan a QR code from a screenshot on Android?

Option 1: Google Lens in your photo app

  1. Take a screenshot by pressing the power and volume down buttons together.
  2. Open it in Google Photos or your gallery app.
  3. Tap the Lens icon. Google Lens reads the code and shows the link or text.
  4. Tap the result to open it.

Option 2: Circle to Search

On supported Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones, you do not even need a screenshot. With the QR code on screen, long-press the home button or the navigation bar, then circle the code with your finger. Google shows the link at the bottom of the screen. If nothing happens, search for “Circle to Search” in your Settings and make sure it is turned on.

Option 3: The Google app

Open the Google app, tap the Lens camera icon in the search bar and choose the saved QR code image from your gallery.

How do you scan a QR code on a computer?

  • QR code on a web page: in Chrome, right-click the code and choose Search image with Google. Google Lens opens in a side panel and shows the link.
  • Saved image: go to google.com, click the Lens camera icon in the search box, then drag the image in or upload it.
  • Mac: on recent versions of macOS, open the image in Preview or Photos and hover over the code. If Live Text recognizes it, you can click the link. If not, use Google Lens in Chrome.
  • Windows Camera app: the built-in Camera app can scan a QR code you hold up to the webcam, such as one on your phone, but it cannot read an image already saved on your computer.

How do you check a QR code is safe before opening it?

A QR code hides its destination, which is why scammers use them. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns about fake codes stuck over real ones on parking meters and about emails or texts with QR codes that claim a package could not be delivered or that your account has a problem. Before you open a scanned link:

  1. Read the full address. Look for misspellings, extra words or swapped letters, such as “arnazon” instead of “amazon.”
  2. Be suspicious of urgency. A message that pushes you to act right away is a classic warning sign.
  3. Do not log in through a QR code from a message. Go to the company’s website or app yourself instead.
  4. Never pay through an unexpected QR code. Use the official app or website.
  5. Keep your phone updated and protect your accounts with two-factor authentication.

A screenshot actually gives you an advantage here: you can copy the link and check it calmly before opening anything. For more warning signs, read how to spot a phishing email or text.

What if the QR code will not scan?

  • Crop and zoom: crop the screenshot so the code fills most of the image, then try again.
  • Include the white border: scanners need the quiet zone around the code. Do not crop it too tightly.
  • Use a sharper image: a blurry or very small code may not read. Take a new screenshot while zoomed in on the code.
  • Check the contrast: dark codes on light backgrounds work best. Inverted or low-contrast designs fail more often.
  • Try another method: if Photos fails, Google Lens often succeeds, and the other way around.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan a QR code that is on my own phone screen?

Yes. Take a screenshot and open it in Photos on iPhone or with Google Lens on Android. On supported Android phones, Circle to Search reads the code without a screenshot.

Do I need a QR scanner app?

No. iPhones and most Android phones can read QR codes with built-in tools. Avoid unknown scanner apps that ask for many permissions; check them with our guide to app permissions.

Can I scan a QR code from a photo in my gallery?

Yes. The same steps work for any saved image, not just screenshots.

Is it safe to scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Scanning the code itself is harmless. The risk is opening the link. Read the address first and only open codes from people and companies you trust.

Scan it, then check it

Scanning a QR code from a screenshot takes a few seconds: Photos on iPhone, Google Lens or Circle to Search on Android, and Chrome on a computer. The habit worth building is the next step: read the link before you open it, and never sign in or pay through a code you did not expect.
