AI in Your Browser: Gemini in Chrome, Copilot in Edge and Free Browser Tools

You can now use AI directly in your web browser without installing a separate app. Gemini in Chrome and Copilot Mode in Microsoft Edge are free with a signed-in account, Claude in Chrome is an extension for paid Claude plans and Safari is adding AI features with Apple’s 2026 updates. Browser-based tools can also handle everyday jobs such as compressing images or creating QR codes without uploading your files. This guide explains what each browser AI can do, how to turn it on and how to use it safely.

Gemini in Chrome: free AI built into Chrome
Gemini in Chrome is an AI assistant built into Google Chrome. According to Google, it can summarize articles, explain complex topics, find information across your open tabs, draft emails and social posts, create images and hold voice conversations with Gemini Live. Google expanded it in June 2026 to personal Google accounts and Workspace users on Windows, Mac and ChromeOS, in more regions including Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
How to use it: sign in to Chrome with your Google Account and click the Gemini icon at the top of the browser. If you do not see it yet, it may not have reached your account or region.
Copilot Mode in Edge: free AI browsing for Edge users
Copilot Mode is an experimental mode in Microsoft Edge that adds AI chat, help across multiple tabs and Copilot Actions, which can complete some tasks for you. Microsoft says it is free for all signed-in Edge users on Windows and Mac, while Copilot Pro subscribers get higher limits for Actions and Vision.
How to turn it on: go to aka.ms/copilot-mode and switch on the toggle. You can turn it off later in Edge settings. Two optional privacy settings, Context clues and Personalization, control whether Copilot uses your browsing history and activity to improve answers, so review them after you enable it.
Claude in Chrome: an AI that works in your browser for you
Claude in Chrome is an extension that lets Claude read, click, type and navigate websites alongside you, including sites such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. According to Anthropic’s help center, it is available on all paid Claude plans and works only in Google Chrome on desktop.
Anthropic is clear that letting an AI act on websites carries risk, even with its safety systems. Start with low-risk tasks, keep an eye on what it does and do not let it make payments or change account settings without checking. Claude in Chrome is not part of Claude’s free plan; see what is free in our list of the best free AI tools.
Safari and Apple Intelligence
With Apple’s 2026 software updates, Safari is gaining AI features. According to 9to5Google’s summary of Apple’s announcement, Safari can group tabs by topic, watch a page for changes with “Notify Me” and create a custom extension from a description. These features rely on Apple Intelligence and supported devices; compare Apple’s and Google’s approaches in Apple Intelligence vs Gemini on Android.
Free browser tools that do not upload your files
Not every useful browser tool needs a chatbot. ShokokoTech’s free online tools run in your browser, and the image and QR tools process your files on your own device instead of uploading them to our server:
- Image Toolkit: compress, resize and convert images, for example AI-generated PNG files to smaller WebP files. See how to compress images without losing quality.
- QR Code Generator: create QR codes for links, text and Wi-Fi, or scan a QR code from an image.
- Internet Speed Test: check your connection when AI tools feel slow. Learn how to test your internet speed accurately.
How do you use AI in your browser safely?
- Know what the AI can see. Browser assistants may read your open tabs and page content. Close tabs with private information before asking for help.
- Review privacy settings such as Edge’s Context clues and your Gemini activity settings. Our AI chatbot privacy settings guide shows where to find the main controls.
- Watch agents closely. Tools that click and type for you can be tricked by text hidden in web pages, so keep sensitive actions in your own hands.
- Never share passwords or card numbers in an AI chat.
- Check AI summaries against the original page when facts matter.
AI features and extensions can add load to your browser. If Chrome starts to lag, follow our guide on how to speed up Chrome.
