iPhone Storage Still Full After Deleting Photos? 7 Fixes

If your iPhone still says “Storage Almost Full” after you deleted photos, the photos are probably still on your phone. Deleted photos and videos move to the Recently Deleted album and stay there for 30 days, still using space. Open Photos, tap Recently Deleted under Utilities, unlock it with Face ID, then tap Select and Delete All. If that is not enough, the space is likely used by something else: message attachments, app caches, offline downloads or the “System Data” category. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see exactly what is taking up room. This guide walks through every fix.
Why is my iPhone storage still full after deleting photos?
- Recently Deleted: Apple keeps deleted photos and videos for 30 days so you can recover them. They count toward storage until that time runs out or you delete them for good.
- Photos are not the biggest user: Messages, apps, videos downloaded for offline viewing and podcasts often take more space than the photo library.
- iCloud vs iPhone storage confusion: the “iCloud storage full” warning is about your online plan, not your phone. Deleting photos from the phone may not change it, and vice versa.
- System Data: caches, logs and temporary files grow over time and are shown separately.
- The number is not updated yet: the storage screen can take a moment to recalculate after a big cleanup.
Step 1: Empty Recently Deleted
- Open the Photos app and scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Recently Deleted and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Tap Select, then Delete All, and confirm.
Apple notes that items removed from this album cannot be recovered, so check that you do not need anything first. If your photos are backed up elsewhere, see our guide on backing up phone photos to the cloud.
Step 2: See what is really using your storage
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Wait a few seconds for the colored bar to load.
- Look at the list of apps, sorted from largest to smallest.
The bar shows categories such as Apps, Photos, Media, Messages, iOS and System Data. Start with whatever is largest. Tap any app to see how much is the app itself and how much is its documents and data.
Step 3: Clean up Messages
Years of photos, videos and voice notes in iMessage and WhatsApp can use many gigabytes.
- In iPhone Storage, tap Messages, then Review Large Attachments. Swipe left on items you do not need and delete them.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages (or Settings > Messages on older iOS versions) and choose 1 Year or 30 Days instead of Forever. Older messages and their attachments are deleted automatically.
- In WhatsApp, open Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage to find and delete large files and forwarded media.
Step 4: Offload or delete apps you do not use
In iPhone Storage, look for the recommendation Offload Unused Apps and tap Enable. Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, so you can reinstall it later and pick up where you left off. You can also tap any individual app and choose Offload App or Delete App.
Games, video editors and social apps with large caches are usually the biggest wins. Our guide to checking app permissions is a good companion while you review your apps.
Step 5: Remove offline downloads and big media
- Streaming apps: Netflix, Prime Video, Spotify and YouTube downloads can use several gigabytes. Delete them in each app’s Downloads section.
- Podcasts: remove downloaded episodes and turn off automatic downloads.
- Files app: check On My iPhone and the Downloads folder for large PDFs, ZIP files and videos, then empty Recently Deleted in Files too.
- Big videos: 4K videos take huge amounts of space. Move them to a computer or cloud before deleting, or share them with our guide on sending large files for free.
Step 6: Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage
If you use iCloud Photos, go to Settings > Apps > Photos (or Settings > Photos on older iOS versions) and choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Your full-resolution photos and videos stay in iCloud, while your iPhone keeps smaller versions and downloads originals when you need them. This can free a lot of space, but your iCloud plan must be large enough to hold your library. If iCloud itself is full, read how to free up Google Drive and iCloud storage.
Step 7: Shrink System Data
System Data (shown as “Other” on older versions) includes caches, logs and temporary files. Apple says the iPhone removes cached and temporary files when it needs space, but these steps can help it along:
- Clear Safari data: Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This signs you out of websites.
- Restart your iPhone to clear temporary files.
- Update iOS in Settings > General > Software Update.
- Delete and reinstall apps with very large “Documents and Data,” such as social media apps.
If System Data is still huge, backing up the iPhone and restoring it is the last resort, and it usually shrinks this category significantly.
Which fix frees the most space?
| Fix | Typical space saved | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Empty Recently Deleted | Everything you just deleted | 1 minute |
| Review large message attachments | Often several gigabytes | 5 minutes |
| Offload unused apps | Depends on the apps | 1 minute |
| Delete streaming downloads | Often several gigabytes | 2 minutes |
| Optimize iPhone Storage | Large, for big photo libraries | Runs in the background |
How to keep your iPhone from filling up again
- Set Keep Messages to 1 year.
- Leave Offload Unused Apps turned on.
- Record video in 1080p instead of 4K unless you need it (Settings > Apps > Camera > Record Video).
- Use Optimize iPhone Storage with iCloud Photos.
- Check iPhone Storage once a month.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone say storage is full when I have nothing on it?
Messages attachments, app data, offline downloads and System Data often use more space than photos. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see the real breakdown.
Does deleting photos from iPhone delete them from iCloud?
If iCloud Photos is turned on, yes. Deleting a photo on one device removes it from iCloud and your other devices after it leaves Recently Deleted. Back up anything you want to keep first.
How long do deleted photos stay on my iPhone?
Thirty days in the Recently Deleted album, unless you delete them sooner.
Is it safe to clear System Data?
You cannot delete it directly. The steps above clear caches and temporary files safely; none of them delete your personal data except clearing Safari history.
Free up space in 10 minutes
Start by emptying Recently Deleted, then check iPhone Storage for the real space hogs, usually Messages, apps and downloads. Most people free several gigabytes without deleting a single photo they want to keep.
