Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, check reading time and keyword use, and see if your text fits a character limit. Your text stays in your browser and is never sent to our server.
Details
Top keywords
- Common words like “the” and “and” are skipped.
Reading time uses 200 words per minute and speaking time uses 130 words per minute, typical averages for adults. Your own speed may differ.
How do you use the Word Counter?
- Type in the box or paste text from a document, email or website.
- Read the live totals at the top: words, characters, sentences and paragraphs.
- Choose a limit, such as an X post or a meta description, to see how many characters you have left. The bar turns orange when you go over.
- Check Top keywords to spot words you repeat too often.
- Click Copy text when you are done.

How does the Word Counter count?
| Count | How it is calculated |
|---|---|
| Words | Groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces. Hyphenated words such as “well-known” count as one word. |
| Characters | Every letter, number, space and symbol, including line breaks. |
| Characters (no spaces) | All characters except spaces, tabs and line breaks. |
| Sentences | Text ending with a period, question mark or exclamation mark. |
| Paragraphs | Blocks of text separated by a line break. |
Different apps count slightly differently, especially for numbers, abbreviations and emoji, so small differences from Word or Google Docs are normal.
Why do word and character counts matter?
- Social media: platforms limit post length, so a character count helps you fit your message.
- SEO: search results show a limited amount of your page title and description, so shorter, clear text is safer.
- School and work: essays, applications and reports often have word limits.
- Readability: shorter sentences are easier to read. If your average sentence length is above 20 words, try splitting some sentences.
Is my text private?
Yes. The Word Counter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is not uploaded to ShokokoTech or stored anywhere, and it disappears when you close or refresh the page.
